Very quickly now as I’ve to go cast my meaningful municipal vote, I’d like to introduce you to a beguiling artist I met beneath the full moon last night. Someone else who knows the power of the pseudonym, Meredith Godrea, performs under the mythical name Gregory and the Hawk. She donned the mask to avoid being labeled a ‘singer-songwriter’.
‘Boats and Birds‘ stole my heart with its lyrics and dreamy sound. After a love that held me ransom in a pretty glass cage, the very concept of love existing ‘to make you free’ resonates at the core of this scarred scarlet heart. I believe real love does exactly that: allows you to expand, evolve and shine as brightly as you’re capable… and ultimately sets you free. Possession kills love (and life) quicker than mamba poison. As a breakup anthem, ‘In Fact‘ is riddled with enough irony to make you laugh through your tears. Play loud on a broken tape deck for maximum effect.
Right. I need to psyche up for my trip to the bright lights and the drive to Llandudno (casting that all important X for democracy) via Hout Bay before I get to the good. An evening steeped in inspiration beckons: Zwe‘s (Nguni like me) opening at iArt (first time his photography is being exhibited in South Africa), a gig at Alma Cafe and… night caps with the crew at A Touch of Madness. Happy day! And on that high note, here’s another to make your day:
…if you be my boat I’ll be your sea * a depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity…
