Busy past few days catching up (and nearly splitting my sides laughing at jokes about ginja’s and their habits with hobbits) with old friends, meeting new ones, driving through trippy misty wonderlands and settling hefty vet bills. So in the interests of getting a post out (before I whittle down to once a week and focus on that 50k in a month goal which went by with a *whoosh* in all attendant chaos post breakup trauma take 2) I’ve got some beguiling new music for you.
Night is, and pretty much has always been, very much my time. Maybe it’s a writerly thing: penning words from deep recesses of the heart and mind which fosters a certain resonance for the solitude of late night hours. Time slows as senses magically distil down to essence – small sounds crash, touch heightens and magnifies, sight is restricted but focused. I relish the simple solitude as one by one people fall under sleep’s spell and the world calms, quietening. Imagination wrestles free to soar, unfettered, amoungst the stars. I believe we feel more intensely once the sun sets which is probably why it’s my favourite time to write. Or think. And in thinking, dream…
Anyway. Here’s something which reminded me why I love the night:
Pitcfork described Jamie Woon’s Night Air as impeccably crafted – it is. The young Brit’s got quite a voice, vaguely feminine and liltingly lyrical but eerily soulful and shadowy too. Think smoky jazz in the middle of a redwood forest – at midnight. The video’s got edge down to fine art with a haunting chromatic bleakness that is both undeniably sensuous and downright sexy. Which happens to be another reason I’m so inclined to the night…

I am in love with this song and I often listen to it whilst making lampshades. I dream of past loves and the heady days gone by when we stayed up all night and walked through the dark into the dawn.
It’s utterly magical and beguiling a song Quincy. And a great tune to create just about anything with… *sigh* that image: dark deep night night, walking winding paths, like a labyrinth as we chase the stars through the sky to the dawn of the sun. So ubiquitous of love too… Thank you for reading, Sx
I totally agree! There is something about the night that is so enticing, mysterious, and adventurous. There must be some sort of writing fairy that visits a writer from the hours of 9 PM to 3 AM or beyond, or at least I’d like to think so. Another beautiful post!
See? It *must* have to do with writing (and other creative pursuits). My muse is most definitely a magical midnight creature – it’s almost like the sun seeps words from my fingers before they reach the screen. Ah but the night, the night calms and cloaks me, my skull eases apart and my imagination takes to wing… Thank you so much for taking the time to comment – glad you’re still reading (I love the updates I get from you that kinda zing! into my inbox). Keep writing lovely lady – you and your late night writing fairy! lots love, Sx
