Magical things wend their way to Scarlet: missives from the gods, messages from the universe, memories, dreams, signs and sigils. Here’s a little treasure trove to dive into…
That’s it: lift the lid, dip fingers into the darkness, feel for textures, wait for something to find you. A-ha! What’s this? Slim as a leaf, cool and rectangular. Slowly, bring it into the light – let’s see what you’ve found! Why, it’s a postcard, sent from the past to a curious now-future.
A little message, a call to remember, decree to believe. Generated by the genius Arcade Fire in collaboration with Chris Milk, you can trip back in time, visit your childhood and create your own postcard to the present via the The Wilderness Downtown ’experiment’. Remember those ‘Choose Your Own Adventure‘ books? Well, it’s like that, only… better! using Google Chrome and Map technology to create an interactive, personalized video (plus soundtrack: wait for it!) Trust me, you’ll be happy you did…
Slip your hand in again, feel around. Be patient… the right object will find you. Hang on, you’ve got something don’t you? A slick, shiny Polaroid with an inscription scrawled on the back:
‘somewhere i have never traveled…‘
… but would like to. This lighthouse stands on the very edge of the world and watches over the seas at Neist Point, Isle of Skye. After a trip to Arniston last year, I developed a burning affinity for these beacons of light… I also happen to have a thing for the Scottish (my mixed genetic code): most especially Skye and Talisker – the local (and only) whiskey produced in the region. It’s a sweet, smoky and smooth and the favourite of another writer Robert Louis Stevenson who celebrated in verse: “The king o’ drinks, as I conceive it, Talisker, Isla, or Glenlivet.” Sound advice. Dr Whiskey (hmmm sounds like my kind of doc) rates it as one of the best whiskeys he’s tasted. So, one day… an adventure to end of the earth. Who’s coming??
Hmmmm, you’re starting to enjoy delving into this little treasure trove and seeing some new beauty come to light. Impatiently you dig into the contents and bring forth…what exactly is it? Why, it’s a newspaper clipping. And a heartwarming message:
Not done yet? Curiosity like a cat is scratching at your fingertips. Keep looking, there’s always more to discover. Sink you hands deep into the darkness, let you skin slide across the surface of things til you find something long and cylindrical, a thin cigar of paper. Draw it out, untie the ribbon and hurriedly unfurl the scroll. Ah, a quote from the marvelous Mark Twain:
